In case the family was curious--a box elder bug did make it to Ireland. Box elder bugs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_elder_bug) are a veritable plague in Iowa this spring, and they were absolutely everywhere when I was home--I would wake up with several in my waterglass every morning. I admired this bug's tenacity in surviving 1) a freezing trip to Des Moines in the back of my father's truck, 2) a long plane ride to Ireland, and 3) several days of being moved back and forth in a v. heavy suitcase. However, after taking its picture, I promptly squished it--I had no desire to infest Ireland, particularly since St. Patrick is no longer around to get rid of them like he did all those snakes. Posted by Picasa

MILLIONS KILLED IN DAYLONG ASSAULT
Around 9:00 A.M. Sunday morning, millions of Box Elder bugs were caught off guard by the attack of Vacuum Ali as he unveiled the Oreck XL handheld vacuum with a whooping 6.5 amps of power. The on slot lasted nearly 3 hours and did not end until every Box Elder bug in sight had succumbed to the Oreck XL. When interviewed for this story, Box Elder bugs that managed to hide said, "It really sucked".

The first attack was followed by a second wave that afternoon when Soap Suds Ali launched an outdoors offensive with a spray bottle full of a water and liquid soap mixture that proved lethal for the millions of Box Elder bugs that were sunning themselves in large clusters on the South side of the house. The second attack only lasted about 30 minutes. The few survivors are "cleaning" up their act.

It appears that the Ali boys are bent on total eradication of the Box Elder bugs as the Oreck XL is still plugged in and used sporadically as BEbugs make a run for their lives. This early A.M. only 3 of these pesky critters were spotted. OH! The Oreck XL just mobilized again.
