I'm in a hotel in North Platte that smells, rather unfortunately, like a hotel in Hyderabad...although the scent of mothballs is usually out of place in US hotels, which makes me wonder who or what died in here. My day started off without mothballs; I awoke in Iowa, took care of some stuff to prepare for my departure, hung out with my dad, showered, packed, loaded my car, are lunch, etc. By 1:30 or so I couldn't delay the inevitable any longer, so I said my farewells to my parents and [censored] and hit the road.
I stopped in Osceola for gas, then stopped somewhere east of Kearney (York?) to make a hotel reservation, use the bathroom, and buy a soda from a rather bizarre convenience store. Other than those stops, I powered through - fueled by caffeine and a heavy dose of nostalgia thanks to Sirius PopRocks, which was hosted by smashmouth this weekend and included tons of songs from my high school/college years. Of course, that led to a lot of pondering the fact that those years were two decades ago, which is nearly (but not quite) as depressing as this hotel room.
Sssanyway, I got to North Platte around 9:15, checked into my room, and then went to Applebee's to eat a late dinner. It turns out the Applebee's is way more happening (and slightly less depressing) than the Ruby Tuesday I usually go to when I'm in North Platte, so I think I'm a convert - although I realize it's slightly ridiculous that I have a regular restaurant in North Platte. However, an older man asked to borrow my phone, which was rather unusual - I don't think this was a ploy by a foreign power to steal my secrets, but you never know.
And now I need to sleep so I can get up and get on the road - goodnight!
