I took a vanpool for the first time today, and overall it was a success. It didn't save me time, precisely - in fact, it was about the same or perhaps slightly longer than driving myself. But since it's free and I don't have to pay for gas, and also don't have to pay for the express lane pass (the express lane is the only way that I can do the commute in the same time as the vanpool, but that adds up if I do it both ways every day), and also don't have to drive, it seems like a win. Also, I like the people in my vanpool - I got invited to join a couple of people on my team (Kristen, who I'm friends with outside of work and who is Barbara's daughter; and Andy, who is hilarious and is partners with Nina, who works on a different team in our same company and is also hilarious). I resisted at first because I didn't want to harsh their mellow since I'm technically their boss (technically is perhaps misused there; I am their boss), but I think it will be good to do it at least a couple of days a week.
Unfortunately, the vanpool was the sum total of relaxing work things today; the rest of the day was a straight slog from 9 to 4:45 without any breaks, other than being fifteen minutes late to a meeting so that I had time to run downstairs and grab food. Each individual meeting was pretty good, but the sum total resulted in some stress. So when I got home, I unpacked several boxes in my kitchen (where I'm almost done), took out trash and recycling for tomorrow, and then walked down the street to grab enchiladas and a margarita to alleviate my stress. I successfully got my first comped drink in my new neighborhood (2.5 weeks in, with one week in Iowa) after I ran out the door to give the couple who'd been sitting next to me the phone charger that they'd left behind - so my talents for getting free drinks from bartenders remain intact despite my advancing age.
And now, after doing pretty much nothing for the last hour, it's time for bed - goodnight!
